confining liquid
[kən′fīn·iŋ ‚lik·wəd] (chemical engineering)
A liquid seal (most often mercury or sodium sulfate brine) that is displaced during the no-loss transfer of a gas sample from one container to another.

The gas pipe--eudiometer is of 350 ml size and contains the
confining liquid. It is connected to the levelling vessel with solution.
At the top a shelf is provided on which there are the levelling vessels for surplus
confining liquid. At the bottom, a trough 2500 x 200 x 200 mm lined with insulating material is provided to prevent excessive heat losses and to enable the fermenters to be in the dark.
