Volumes of the air gaps of the middle ear and the
mastoid in patients with a blocked Eustachian tube were calculated using the method used by Mehta et al.
The prognostic factors were patient age (<60/[greater than or equal to]60 years), staging (I-IV), S1 involvement, S2 involvement, T involvement, M involvement, development of
mastoid cells (MC0-1/MC2-3), pathological status of the stapes (S0/S1), surgical procedure (CWU/CWD), malleus handle (present/absent), chorda tympani nerve (present/absent), and middle ear mucosa (normal/diseased).
Adequacy of ventilation pathways of various middle ear, attic and
mastoid compartments
While there are long lists of cranial morphological traits that have been used for sex estimation, five traits remain the most commonly utilized by anthropologists: nuchal crest,
mastoid process, supraorbital margin, glabella, and mental eminence.
Diagnosis of cancer in the middle ear and the
mastoid process is seldom made early; this can contribute to the unique anatomy of middle ear and the fact that many benign pathologies such as otitis media and its complications share similar clinical presentations; most commonly reported symptoms include otorrhea, otalgia, aural fullness, tinnitus, and hearing loss [5].
A computed tomography (CT) examination of the temporal bone showed that the right
mastoid area, the middle ear cavity, and the external ear canal were completely obstructed by soft tissue and bone defect and erosion of ossicles were present in the posterior of the
mastoid bone (Figure: B).
By using a goniometer, the mean distance from the most protruding point of the helix to the
mastoid bone and the mean concha-to-mastoid angle were calculated.
During the operation, purulent secretion and eroded bone should be removed, clearing the involved air cells of the zygomatic root as well as the
mastoid process.
A CWD procedure also results in the creation of a large air space lateral and posterior to the eardrum, that is, the air space within the
mastoid bowl including the external auditory canal.
With the posterior ear canal wall preserved, the
mastoid was contoured.
Role played by preoperative CT imaging is evaluation of lesion extent (attic, antrum and
mastoid); detection of complications, such as bone lysis and cerebromeningeal complications; and detection of anatomical variations (jugular dehiscence and lateralized sinus).
