There is some error in this test due to water of crystallization in the clay, carbonates and other impurities in certain base sands that contribute to the LOI.
Treated with low levels of alumina or silica, these pigments contain less water of crystallization, so they remain stable at high temperatures.
USG LP Filler #2, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, is made by fine grinding select gypsum containing about 17% water of crystallization. Because of that water, LP Filler #2 can provide fire retardancy in a room-temperature curable system such as unsaturated polyester spray-up.
