a national park in the Scandinavian mountains in northern Sweden (north of 68° N lat.) near the Norwegian border.
Abisko was founded as a scenic preserve in 1909. Its area of 75 sq km (or 50 sq km, according to other sources) includes the basin of the Abisko River and part of the south shore of Torne Lake. There are sparse birch and evergreen (primarily pine) forests. The many mammals in the park include reindeer, polar fox, lemming, wolf, wolverine, elk, and brown bear. Among the birds are the polar partridge, long-tailed jaeger, white owl, snow bunting, golden eagle, bluethroat, snipe, and brambling. A research station of the Swedish Academy of Science is located on the park’s grounds.
