an ancient Celtic tribe inhabiting the area between the Saône and Loire rivers in Gaul; their central city was Bibracte. As a result of Caesar’s Gallic campaigns (58–51 B.C.), the area settled by the Aedui was conquered by the Romans and incorporated into the Gallic provinces of Rome.
