Aleksandriia

 

a city under oblast jurisdiction; center of Aleksandriia Raion, Kirovograd Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. It is located on the Ingulets River and has a station on the Znamenka-Piatikhatki railroad line. Its population is 67,800 (1968). Lignite is mined and made into briquettes there. Industry is represented by transport lifting equipment plants and plants for the repair of ore-processing equipment and automobiles, as well as enterprises of light industry and the food industry. Building materials are also produced. The city has a division of the Dnepropetrovsk Mining Institute and five specialized secondary educational institutions. It was founded in the middle of the 18th century as a fortress in the southern Ukraine.
