Berar
a historical region in central India. In 1490 the Berar sultanate, which had broken off from the Bahmanid state, arose there. In 1572 it was conquered by the Ahmadnagar sultanate. In the 17th century, Berar was included in the state of the Great Moguls. In the 18th and early 19th centuries it belonged to the Hyderabad state and partially to the Marathas. In 1853 it was subjugated by the English East India Company. Until 1960, Berar was part of Bombay State in the Republic of India; in 1960 it was made part of Maharashtra State.
