Bezmein

 

a city (until 1963, a settlement) in the Turkmen SSR. Located in the foothills of the Kopetdag. It has a railroad station 25 km northwest of Ashkhabad. Population, 12,900 (1968). Bezmein is one of the old centers of wine-making and a new center of the construction-materials industry in the republic. There are wine-making and tomato-canning plants; there is extraction and production of construction materials (cement, slate, asbestos-cement pipes, reinforced-concrete articles, and others). The V. I. Lenin State Regional Power Station and a construction technicum are located in Bezmein.
