Bilibino

 

an urbantype settlement and the administrative center of Bilibino Raion, Chukchi National Okrug, Magadan Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Bol’shoi Keperveem River (Kolyma basin). Population, 10,500 (1968). Gold is mined, and there are mechanical repair and construction materials plants. An atomic electric power plant is under construction near Bilibino (1970). The settlement was formed in 1958 and named in honor of the Soviet geologist Iu. A. Bilibin.
