an aristocratic Swedish family. The most famous are Per Brahe the Elder and Per Brahe the Younger.

Per Brahe the Elder Born 1520; died Sept. 1, 1590. One of the first three counts of Sweden (beginning in 1561); the closest adviser to King Gustavus I Vasa and King Eric XIV. In 1568, Per Brahe the Elder joined the enemies of Eric XIV. Under the new king, John III, he occupied the post of supreme judge.

Per Brahe the Younger Born Feb. 18, 1602; died Sept. 12, 1680. Grandson of Per Brahe the Elder. Per Brahe the Younger was a count and one of the leaders and ideologists of the reactionary magnate oligarchy. He was governor-general of Finland from 1637 to 1640 and 1648 to 1654. Per Brahe the Younger improved the Swedish administration of Finland and founded a university in Abo (Turku) in 1640.
