Established: 1966.
Location:On the Texas gulf coast at the west end of the Galveston Bay.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, auto tour route (7 miles), trails, fishing pier.
Activities:Boating, fishing, biking, crabbing, wildilife watching, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Birders often identify more than 200 species on and around the refuge during the Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count in mid-December. This count usually ranks number one or two in the nation in the number of species sighted.
Habitats: 43,388 acres of a mixture of fresh and salt marshes, sloughs, ponds, coastal prairies, bottomland forests.
Access: Year round during daylight hours.
Wild life: Wading and shorebirds such as herons, ibis, also roseate spoonbills, alligators, frogs, toads, salamanders, coyotes, bobcats, butterflies, dragonflies.
