Brendan T. Byrne State Forest
Location:30 miles east of Camden; accessible via the New Jersey Turnpike.
Facilities:82 tent and trailer campsites with flush toilets and showers, 3 group
sites with water and flush toilets, 3 cabins, 3 yurts (é), picnic
areas, picnic shelters, playground, multi-use trails (including a segment of the state's Batona Trail),
historic village.
Activities:Camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, bicycling, mountain biking,
horseback riding, cross-country skiing, bird watching, environmental
programs.
Special Features:Forest (formerly known as Lebanon State Forest) is the site of historic
Whitesbog Village, which is undergoing restoration. Founded in the
1870s, Whitesbog was once the largest cranberry farm in the state and
is the birthplace of the cultivated blueberry. Forest also contains the
735-acre Cedar Swamp Natural Area, which supports the threatened swamp
pink and other endangered plant species.
