Brown, Mather
(1761–1832) painter; born in Boston, Mass. An itinerant portrait painter and miniaturist, he studied with Gilbert Stuart (1773), then left for England and studied under Benjamin West (1781). He stayed in England, painting austere portraits, including those of King George III, the Duke of York, and Charles Bulfinch (1786).
