Brown, Rita Mae

(1944–  ) writer; born in Hanover, Pa. She continued her feminist and radical lesbian activism, begun as a student at New York University, into the 1970s, working for national political organizations, then pretty much withdrew to concentrate on her writing. Her zesty, best-selling first novel, Rubyfruit Jungle (1973), was followed by other fiction, poems, essays, and screenplays. Later books include Bingo (1988).
