Established: 1939.
Location:South of Gila Bend, Arizona.
Facilities:Visitor center, trails, primitive campsites.
Activities:Hiking, hunting, camping, educational programs.
Special Features:Cabeza Prieta, the third largest national wildlife refuge in the lower 48 states, shares a 56-mile border with Sonora, Mexico. Although the land is desert, it is not as barren as it appears; the refuge is home to 391 kinds of plants and more than 300 species of wildlife.
Habitats: 860,010 acres of Sonoran Desert, consisting of low mountain ranges separated by broad alluvial valleys.
Access: Year round with some restrictions; contact refuge office.
Wild life: Bighorn sheep, Sonoran pronghorn, and lesser long-nosed bat, desert tortoise, desert horned lizards, desert pocket mouse, red-tailed hawks, Gambrel's quail.
