Carpogonium

 

the female sexual organ in red seaweed. It is bottle-shaped and consists of a broad lower (abdominal) section and a narrow upper section, the trichogyne. After fertilization of the egg cell, the trichogyne dies off. Carpospores form in the lower part; they are sometimes located at the ends of the cellular threads growing from either the egg cells or special cells that are connected to the egg cells by threads.
