Carteret, Philip
(1639–82) first governor of New Jersey; born in Isle of Jersey, England. After arriving at Elizabethport (1665) he instituted a government and summoned the first New Jersey legislature (1668). Following a challenge to his government by Sir Edmund Andros (1680) he was re-instated as governor, but he relinquished his office and died soon afterward.
