Cartographic Grid

a graphic representation of the geographic meridians and parallels on a plane (map). In the compilation of geographic maps a cartographic grid is used to construct the cartographic representation; when the map is used, the cartographic grid makes possible determination of the coordinates of any point (geographic or rectangular, depending on the type of cartographic grid) and the azimuths of lines and estimates of the magnitude of the distortions caused by the cartographic projection on various parts of the map.
