a port and resort in SW Italy, in Campania on the Bay of Naples: site of the Roman resort of Stabiae, which was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 ad. Pop.: 66 929 (2001)

Castellammare di Stabia

 

a port city and resort insouthern Italy, in the Campania region, Naples Province, locatedon the shore of the Bay of Naples of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Popula-tion, 70, 300 (1969). The city has a shipyard. It produces cast androlled steel, transportation equipment, railroad cars, cement, fruit preserves, olive oil, and cheese. A large American oil refin-ery is nearby.
