In southeastern NM, northeast of Las Cruces; organized Feb 24, 1889 from Lincoln County (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Lt. Col. Jose Francisco Chaves (1833-1904), an officer during the Civil War and U.S. representative from NM (1865-67; 1869-71)
