Established: 1936.
Location:23 miles north of Las Vegas in southern Nevada.
Facilities:Primitive campsites, picnic areas, viewing sites, trails, auto tour route, historic features.
Activities:Camping, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:The largest national wildlife refuge in the 48 contiguous states, large enough to cover the state of Rhode Island twice, with room to spare. The site also contains six mountain ranges with elevations ranging from 2,500 feet to nearly 10,000 feet.
Habitats: 1.5 million acres of desert shrub, desert woodlands, and coniferous forest in the Mohave Desert.
Access: Unlimited; a four-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance is recommended.
Wild life: Desert bighorn sheep. Also provides habitat for the endangered pahrump poolfish, mule deer, coyotes, and birds.
