Size: 1,800,000 acres.
Location:Southwestern Montana. Accessible by US 20, 89, and 191. Nearby cities/towns include Bozeman, Livingston, and West Yellowstone.
Facilities:Visitors centers, 44 campgrounds, 24 cabins, 25 picnic sites, trails (2,600+ miles), boat launches, 3 ski areas.
Activities:Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, mountain climbing, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling.
Special Features:Forest spans six mountain ranges, protects significant parcels of two wilderness areas (Absaroka-Beartooth and Lee Metcalf), and includes long stretches of the Yellowstone, Gallatin, and Madison rivers--which offer anglers "blue ribbon" trout fishing. Other features include the Avalanche Center, providing public avalanche advisories daily during mid-winter (406-587-6981) and OTO Dude Ranch, where volunteers learn skills to help restore and renovate a historic ranch built in 1912. Forest surrounds the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park (see entry in national parks section).
