Hayes, Ira

(1932–55) Pima war hero; born in Sacaton, Ariz. He was one of five marines photographed raising the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima (1945). Unable to deal with the adulation that followed the photograph's wide publication, he returned to the reservation where he died of alcoholism and exposure.
