Kunia-Urgench

 

an urban-type settlement, the administrative center of Kunia-Urgench Raion, Tashauz Oblast, Turkmen SSR. Located 40 km from the Amu Darya River and 35 km southwest of the Khodzheili station on the Chardzhou-Kungrad rail line, with which it is linked by highway. Population, 14,500 (1971). There is a cotton-ginning plant and a milk-processing and butter-processing plant in Kunia-Urgench. Carpets are also produced there. A people’s amateur theater is located in Kunia-Urgench, and the ruins of the ancient capital of Khorezm are located in the southern outskirts of the settlement.
