Leukon I

 

archon, king of the Bosporan state from 389 or 388 until 349 or 348 B.C. Under Leukon I a broad expansion of the state occurred: Theodosia (c. 380 B.C.), all of the Eastern Crimea, and the Kuban’ tribes (Sind, Toret, and others) were annexed to the Bosporan state. The seizure of vast fertile lands made possible the growth of Bosporan grain exports, especially to Athens, and this had a favorable effect upon the whole economy and culture of the Bosporus. The issuance of gold coins first began during Leukon’s reign in the city of Panticapaeum, circa 375 B.C.
