Mam

 

an Indian people living in Guatemala and Mexico. Total population, approximately 270,000 (1969, estimate). The Mam language is related to the Mayan group. The Mam religion represents a mixture of Catholicism and strong survivals of ancient beliefs (worship of the “masters of the mountains” and the like). The chief occupations of the Mam are farming, livestock breeding, and seasonal work as hired laborers on coffee plantations.
