(Open Secure Sockets Layer) An open source version of the SSL and TLS security protocols, which provide encryption and server authentication over the Internet. The OpenSSL project began in 1998, runs on every popular operating system and is used in millions of Web servers. See TLS, Heartbleed and OpenVPN.
