Peale, James

(1749–1831) painter; born in Chestertown, Md. His older brother, Charles Willson Peale, was his teacher. He served in the Continental army (1776–79), and painted historical scenes, miniatures on ivory, and landscapes until his eyesight failed (1818). Living in Philadelphia, he helped run the Peale Museum.
