In south-central AZ, southeast of Phoenix; organized Feb 1, 1875 (prior to statehood) from Pima County. Name Origin: Probably for the Pinal tribe of the Apaches, or for an Apache chief. Name means 'deer' in Apache; in Spanish it means 'pine' or possibly 'the Apaches who live in the pines.' Pine groves and deer can be found on nearby mountains
