Location:West-central Wisconsin.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, trails, auto tour route.
Activities:Canoeing, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, educational programs.
Special Features:The refuge is situated in a unique geological formation known as the driftless area. Thousands of years ago, glaciers surrounded but did not pass over the land. Blown into mounds, sand and silt from melting glaciers formed the rolling sand prairies of the refuge.
Habitats: 6,226 acres of forested blufflands, riverine wetlands, and upland sand prairies.
Access: Open year round during daylight hours.
Wild life: White pelicans, great blue herons, great egrets, black terns, grasshopper, lark and vesper sparrows, eastern meadowlarks, bald eagle, osprey, deer, coyote, muskrat, gray squirrels, pileated and red-headed woodpeckers, wild turkey, Blanding's turtle, and painted and snapping turtles.
