Wahidin Sudirohusodo

 

Born circa 1857; died 1917. One of the first organizers of the nationalist movement in Indonesia. A physician.

Wahidin Sudirohusodo conducted widespread educational work. He founded and edited the journal Retno-Dumilah, in which he propagandized the need to expand education, which he saw as the means for awakening popular self-consciousness. In Jogkakarta a circle of like-minded people formed around Wahidin Sudirohusodo. He was chosen deputy chairman of the organization “Budi Utomo,” on its founding in 1908. In Indonesia, Wahidin Sudirohusodo is called the father of the nationalist movement.
