A process in an IBM token ring network which ensures a token is present on the ring, removes circulating frames with unknown or invalid destinations, and performs introductions between machines on the ring.

active monitor

The station (network adapter) that controls the token in a Token Ring network. The active monitor, which is determined through a contention process, maintains clock synchronization and detects and corrects errors in the token framing. See Token Ring.
