The storage of files, in the form of punch cards, microfilm, or magnetic tape, for very long periods of time, in case it is necessary to regenerate the file due to subsequent introduction of errors.

archiving

Storing data for future use or backup. Archiving implies copying to external storage, a server in the network or to the cloud but not usually to the same computer. See archive program, archive formats, backup storage, HSM and cloud storage.
