[′bēt ‚frē·kwən·sē ′äs·ə‚lād·ər] (electronics)
An oscillator in which a desired signal frequency, such as an audio frequency, is obtained as the beat frequency produced by combining two different signal frequencies, such as two different radio frequencies. Abbreviated BFO. Also known as heterodyne oscillator.
