In a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) system, the ability to reassign processors, memory and I/O to specific applications on the fly without shutting down the machine. The reassignment can be done by the operator or automatically from a script that monitors conditions such as time of day or when the traffic to one application becomes excessive.
