- the empirical disproofor refutation of a scientific hypothesis or proposed law. In this general sense, the falsification or the empirical confirmation or verification of propositions of all types is a routine feature of much sociology.
- (more strictly) an alternative procedure to VERIFICATION. See FALSIFICATIONISM. see also VERIFICATION PRINCIPLE.
