Automatic frequency control of a scanning system by using the average timing of the incoming sync signals, rather than by making each pulse trigger the scanning circuit; used in high-sensitivity television receivers designed for fringe-area reception, when noise pulses might otherwise trigger the sweep circuit prematurely.
