virtual IP address

virtual IP address

An IP address that is shared among multiple domain names or multiple servers. Virtual IP addressing enables one IP address to be used when multiple websites are hosted on one server. Virtual IPs are also widely used to balance incoming traffic to multiple servers. The incoming packets are sent to the virtual IP and forwarded to the real IP address of the server targeted to respond.
