Aa (ä) [from a word for “water” of the same Indo-European root as Lat. aqua], name of many small streams of N Europe and Switzerland. Aa, or a derivative of it, is a component part of hundreds of European place names.

(2) A telephone answering system with voice prompts. See automated attendant.
(3) (Double A) A common single-cell battery used in myriad devices from flashlights to electronic equipment of all variety. Like its triple A (AAA) cousin, it provides 1.5 volts of DC power. When used in series, the voltage is multiplied. For example, four AA batteries yield 6 volts.
