advancing blade

advancing blade
In a translational flight, the rotor blade moving forward into the relative airflow (i.e., it is moving in the same direction as the helicopter). Each blade advances through 180° of its travel, normally from dead-astern to dead-ahead. In the case of clock-wise-rotating rotors, the advancing blade will be in the left half of the rotor disc when the helicopter is moving forward; if moving backward, it will be in the right half. If moving sideward to the left, it will be in the rear half; and if moving sideward to the right, it will be in the forward half.

Just a few steps were sufficient to take him to the arc of the propeller and immediately the back of his high-visibility jacket was caught by an advancing blade. Fortunately, rather than dragging him into the propeller, it simply sliced the jacket and the clothes underneath from side to side.
Sikorsky reports that its X2 advancing blade concept technology demonstrator has achieved 168kt (311km/h) forward speed, putting the dual counter-rotating pusher-prop compound beyond the typical maximum speed for traditional helicopters and outside the reach of the company's S-76 chase vehicle's 155kt capability.
The flow field is unsteady and three-dimensional, with transonic flow on the advancing blade, dynamic stall on the retreating blade, blade-vortex interactions (BVI), and vortical wakes.

Eurocopter One year ago, Sikorsky dominated the Heli Expo buzz with a very public unveiling of its X2 advancing blade concept demonstrator, an aircraft that to date has reached 106kt (195km/h) and is expected to gradually ramp up to 250kt by year's end.
