Aiguillette

(in Russian, aksel’bant), a military insignia worn on or about the shoulder. It consists of a gold, silver, or colored thread braid with metal ends, fastened to the right (more rarely the left) shoulder. In the prerevolutionary Russian army, the aiguillette was a part of the uniform of generals, officers of the general staff, and aides-de-camp of all military branches. Aiguillettes are worn in some foreign armies today.
