Airspace in which both IFR (instrument flight rules) and VFR (visual flight rules) flights are permitted and are subject to air traffic control service in this airspace. IFR flights are separated from other IFR flights and receive traffic information about VFR flights. No separation services are provided to VFR aircraft. VFR flights receive traffic information about all other flights. This classification is allotted to less-busy controlled airspace. VFR flights should give flight notification prior to entry and require ATC (air traffic control) route clearance to enter and operate in this airspace. Generally, it is that airspace that extends from the surface to 2500 ft above the airport elevation (charted in MSL, or mean sea level), surrounding those airports that have an operational control tower. The configuration of each Class D airspace is individually tailored and, when instrument procedures are published, the airspace will be designated to contain the procedures. Arrival extensions for instrument approach procedures may be Class D or Class E airspace. Unless other-wise authorized, each person must establish two-way radio communications with the ATC facility providing air traffic services prior to entering the airspace and thereafter maintain those communications for operations in this airspace. There are no restrictions on the pilot's category for operating in this airspace. Formerly known as ATA, or airport traffic area, and control zone (CZ).
