An arrangement in which the horizontal stabilizer (tailplane) is used as a primary pitch control surface for control in a looping plane to increase the effectiveness of controls at high Mach numbers when the effectiveness of the elevator is somewhat reduced. In some aircraft, the elevator is retained and is linked to the tailplane in such a way that its movement causes the elevator, by virtue of its linkages, to move in the usual direction to assist the action of the tailplane. On other aircraft, no elevator is used—this arrangement is known as a slab-tail plane. Also known as allmoving tail, allmoving slab, or stabilator.
