automated optical inspection

The machine-based examination of products by scanning their surfaces. For example, automated optical inspection (AOI) is widely used to spot defects in the manufacture of electronic systems. After printed circuit boards are built, machine vision systems optically scan the boards to discover missing parts, short circuits and poor solder joints. See automated x-ray inspection.
