automatic picture-transmission system[¦ȯd·ə¦mad·ik ′pik·chər tranz′mish·ən ‚sis·təm]
A system in which a meteorological satellite continuously scans and transmits a view of a transverse swath directly beneath it; transmissions can be recorded by simple ground equipment to reconstruct an image of the cloud patterns within a thousand kilometers of the ground station. Abbreviated APT system.
