Bottle Gourd

 

(also calabash; Lagenaria siceraria; formerly L. vulgaris), an annual monoecious plant of the Cucur-bitaceae family, with an angular creeping or prostrate stem and single axillary flowers. The pericarp of mature fruits is very hardy and waterproof. The bottle gourd has been grown in the tropics and subtropics of both hemispheres for a long time. In the USSR it is cultivated in the southern regions for its fruit, and more rarely as a decorative plant.
