Twigs re-growing from 2-year-old stems that were browsed previously had larger diameters at their
bud scale scar than those re-growing from stems that were not browsed in the previous year.
The basic parts of the stem are the terminal bud,
bud scale, terminal bud-scale scar, axillary bud or lateral bud, node, internode, leaf scar, and lenticel.
The length of a year's growth can be determined by measuring the distance between any two rings of terminal
bud scale scars (see Figure 4-9).
The twig needs to be big enough to show the position of the buds (opposite or alternate) and should include at least one
bud scale scar to show the previous year's growth.
