(səlĭs`əlāt'), methyl ester of salicylic acidsalicylic acid
or 2-hydroxybenzoic acid,
C6H4(OH)CO2H, a colorless, crystalline organic carboxylic acid that melts at 159°C;; it is soluble in ethanol and ether but is only slightly soluble in water.

C6H4OHCOOCH3 A colorless, yellow, or reddish liquid, slightly soluble in water, boiling at 222.2°C, with an odor of wintergreen; used in medicine and perfumery, and as a solvent for cellulose derivatives. Also known as betula oil; gaultheria oil; wintergreen oil.
