In his 17th century treatise Culpeper wrote of the conditions required for herbs to have optimal therapeutic qualities, noting in Colewort's (Geum urbanum) case that "they rather delight to grow in shadowy than sunny place".
It also mentions that lettuce loves goat manure and that combining the seeds of lettuce, radishes, nasturtium and colewort will result in a particularly tasty crop of greens.
Similarly, Asman (2002) revealed that the diversity of natural enemies was significantly promoted when colewort plants were intercropped with or planted in proximity to Brassica juncea in the vegetable fields.
