merchant server

Also known as a "commerce server," a merchant server in a network handles online purchases and credit card transactions. The term may refer to the entire computer system or just the software that provides this service. A merchant server implements an electronic commerce protocol that ensures a secure transmission between the clients and cooperating banks. It may also include the online storefront and shopping cart infrastructure. See Internet retailer.
